PhD Position at the Old Dominion University Computer Science on Applied Machine Learning and Natural

The Web Science Digital Libraries (WS-DL) group at the Computer Science Department at the Old Dominion University at Norfolk, VA, USA is recruiting a fully supported graduate student in the PhD program. The student will be primarily working with Dr. Jian Wu, assistant professor of Computer Science, on mining scholarly big data and digital libraries. The project will leverage cutting-edge technologies in machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, and big data on information extraction, classification, and retrieval from scholarly big data corpora, including but not limited to electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), and research papers. Specific tasks include but not limited to typed-entity and relation extraction, citation graph generation and analysis, building search engine systems, developing multiclass and multilabel classification models, and applying word-embedding on text retrieval and summarization tasks. The lab directed by Dr. Jian Wu will closely collaborate with the Computer Science department at Virginia Tech and/or the CiteSeerX group at the Pennsylvania State University in form of data and software sharing and online meetings. The starting date of the position is Spring, 2020. Exceptions may be made if the applicants can start in Fall, 2019. The requirements include the following:

  1. The applicant shall have a Bachelor's degree in at least one of the following subject domains: Computer Science, Information Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Astronomy & Astrophysics. A Master's degree in above fields is a plus.

  2. The applicant should have solid programming and algorithmic skills, preferentially in Python. Experience with packages such as scikit-learn, tensorflow, and/or NLTK is plus.

  3. The applicant should have relevant experiences, sources, or publications, regarding at least one of the following subjects: database systems, information retrieval, natural language processing, machine learning, and big data.
